How can we distinguish between errors that are caused by hardware or software failures?

When the digital drawing tablet cannot be used as normal, that would usually be a hardware failure, however in fact more errors are caused by some software failures. How can we determine whether the errors were due to hardware or software failures? Here are several simple ways to test:
1. The simplest and most effective method is to connect the tablet to another computer. If the tablet works in another computer, this means the tablet is not faulty and the error is due either to the driver program, operating system, application program, or other electromagnetic interference.
2. If condition does not allow testing on anther computer, we can test through several simple steps to see if the tablet is faulty.
a. connect the tablet to the USB port of the computer, the indication light of the tablet should lighten
b. place the grip pen within the effective region of the tablet, press the nib/eraser or the side switch, the indication light of the tablet should change its colour. If the above two are satisfied, normally this means that the tablet is functioning. If you cannot perform the abovementioned simple tests, you can bring along your tablet to the technical service centre and the centre will help you check and test the tablet, which is free of charge.

Analysis and solutions to pressure sensitivity problem of the grip pen?

Possible errors:
“There are some problems for my tablet, it becomes too sensitive now! It senses and records drawing even when it is not in contact with the grip pen; it does not work when I click on it.”
“When I use painter8 to test the tablet, the outcome is different from before. In the past there was not any drawing unless the pen and the tablet were physically in contact. But now, when the pen and the tablet are not in contact, like 1cm apart, the tablet starts recording the drawing.
“When I point the nib to the tablet (not in physical contact, 5-6mm distance), the tablet responds. The arrow randomly clicks on the screen, as if I press the nib hard onto the tablet.

Possible reasons and solutions (In descending order according to the number of occurrence)
(1) Errors occurring on files of the driver cause unstable working of the driver program.
Solution: Uninstall the driver program and reinstall (Please strictly follow the steps shown below because driver program runs at the background, if the steps are not strictly followed, the uninstallation process will not be fully and successfully completed and hence even after reinstallation the same error will occur.)
Steps:
1. Automatic uninstallation
a. Eject the tablet from the computer
b. From “Add/Remove Programs” in the “Control Panel”, look for the Wacom driver program and uninstall the program.
c. Restart the computer and see whether the icon of Wacom still appears in the Control Panel. If not, the installation is successful; otherwise, please try the following steps to manually uninstall the program.
d. Connect the tablet and reinstall the driver program.
2. Manual uninstallation (This method is also suitable for the case in which when users are to install the driver program, the system shows that the relevant driver program has already started and does not allow the installation process to continue):
a. Eject the tablet from the computer
b. Enable the functions to view system files and hidden files in the computer
For Windows 98:
My Computer – View – Folder Options – Uncheck “Hide file extensions for known file types” from the radio button “Show all file”
For Windows 2000/xp/2003
My Computer – Tool - Folder Options – Uncheck “Hide file extensions for known file types” from the radio button “Show all file”
c. Look for residual driver program files and delete all of them
Please click Start – Search – All files and folders. When you search, choose operating system directory, normally the directory would be named windows or winnt
Please search one by one each of the following files. If any of these files can be found, please delete them.
wacom.dat wintab.dll wintab32.dll tablet.cpl tablet.exe tablet.dat WacomTablet.cpl WacomTablet.znc TabUserW.exe
d. Upon completion of deletion the files, restart the computer and install the new driver program
(2) Either the rib or the eraser is too tight, resulting in inflexible movement. If any external materials enter the grip pen leading to inflexible movement of the pen, pressure sensitivity problem will occur.
Solution: Pull the refill out and insert it back to the pen. It should be easy to insert the refill. If you find it difficult to insert the refill, possibly it is because either the refill is too thick or the pen opening is too small. The eraser should be easy to turn as well.
(Note: The grip pens of Volito and Penpartner cannot be changed, if you are users of these 2 grip pens, please do not follow the above the instructions)
(3) There are problems for the grip pens’ pressure capacitor or hardware parameter settings. (This type of problem usually occurs when the pen is used for the first time or has been used for a number of years)
Solution: The only way is to let Wacom do the repair work. Please send your grip pen, alongside a completed maintenance card and the receipt of purchase to Wacom’s Maintenance Department by post. Do not try to dismantle the pen yourself or else you may lose your right to maintenance.

Should I connect the tablet to the computer every time before I turn on my computer, or can I connect them after I turn my computer on? Do I need to eject the tablet when I am not using it? Will the lifespan of the tablet be affected if it is continually connected to the computer?

You must ensure your tablet and the computer are properly connected when you first install the driver program and the first time you restart your computer after the installation of the driver program in order to establish the profile of the tablet on your computer. Once your preference has been established successfully, your tablet can be used immediately upon connection to the computer. If you are not using the tablet for a considerable period of time, it is recommended that you eject the tablet, in other cases, it is recommended not to always connect or disconnect the tablet from the computer. (Applicable operating system: this answer is applicable to tablets with USB interfaces and Windows operating system. Solutions to confusion codes appearing at Wacom tablet driver interface for English-version Windows (for multi-language-version driver program)?

Solutions to confusion codes appearing at Wacom tablet driver interface for English-version Windows (for multi-language-version driver program):
Open “Start” - "Control Panel" - "Regional and Language Options" and then make the following changes. Under “Language Options” select the language region of your operating system and press “OK”
Solution:
To explain in details, for instance, if the user’s operating system is English but he uses his computer in China, the region chosen would be China. Thus, when the user is installing driver, our driver program will automatically assume the operating system to be a Chinese version and hence run a Chinese driver installation interface. Since English-version operating systems do not have Chinese character coding, even for Chinese driver installation interface confusion codes will appear. Differences in language version will usually lead to inconsistency and hence confusion codes.
The new versions of driver program on our website are all multi-language versions, supposedly capable of catering operating systems of all languages. However, as for some operating systems the region options chosen are local ones (not regions of foreign languages), confusion codes may still appear.

Questions related to curling up of the plotting film for Intuos3?

Questions related to curling up of the plotting film for Intuos3!
There are two types of Intuos3 plotting film: the grey one to increase the friction while drawing; the transparent one to make it easier for users to copy the manuscript they want by putting it under the film.
The standard equipment is the grey film and the transparent film can be purchased individually on demand.
Only one side of the upper side of the film is stuck to the tablet using sticker and hence the film can be lifted. When the film is worn down, you can purchase a new film and change it yourself.
Films, like refills, are usual consumables.
Hence, you do not need to be too worried, the curling up of the plotting film is not a problem pertaining to quality.

After some time of usage, there are scratches on the cover film of the tablet, how can I prevent such situation?

Please change and replace the nib on time because its end may become too sharp as a result of usual wear and tear, especially when the pen is used very often. Nibs with ends that are too sharp may damage the cover films of the tablet. Moreover, usage for a long period of time will also lead to normal wear and tear so it would be better for you to regularly change and replace the cover films. Please kindly note that nibs and cover films are consumables and hence not covered for free maintenance. If you need to change or replace nibs or cover films, you can purchase them online on our E-store from our website, or contact nearby franchiser in the region.

What is the power usage for Intuos3? Why can’t it be used when I connect it to the USB port on the keyboard?

Intuos3 needs at least a current of 280 mA from the USB port. Low-power USB ports can only supply 100 mA so when using Intuos3 you must use the major power ports (e.g., USB ports on the computer) or USB hubs. (The above situation is applicable to the following operating systems: Windows 95/98、Windows 2000、Windows XP、Windows ME、Mac OSX)

Can I disable one or two Touch Strip at the same time on Intuos3?

Yes, you can either disable Touch Strip or configure the tablet so that only the grip pen is used. When you do so, avoid touching Touch Strip or else the picture will be scrolled up or down. You can make the changes on such functions under “Wacom Tablet Properties” in the “Control Panel”.

Please follow the steps below to disable Touch Strip:

2. From the table “Tool” at the top of the Control Panel window, select “Function”
3. From the middle of the window, select Touch Strip and click “Disabled” from the pull-down menu of “Function”. Tablets of 6X8 and 9X12 shall have on both left and right side one Touch Strip; whereas for tablets of 4X5 there shall only be one Touch Strip.
4. Close the Control Panel. Please follow the steps below to configure the tablet so that only the grip pen is used.
a. Open “Wacom Tablet Properties” from the Control Panel
b. From the table “Tool” at the top of the Control Panel window, select “Function”
c. From the middle of the window, select Touch Strip and click “Advanced” from the bottom-left corner of the window.
d. Check the relevant boxes from “Only Pen” and press “OK”

Why am I unable to install my driver program?

Possible reasons:
1. Hardware failure: please check if the indication light of the tablet is on. If it is not, please check if the USB port can supply electricity of +5V, if the USB port cannot supply enough electricity or there is poor information transfer because of the usage of extension cord. Surely there is also the possibility that the tablet is faulty and this can be tested by connecting the tablet to another computer.
2. System software failure: when the tablet is connected to the computer and the computer has detected but the while installing the driver program it says the tablet is not found. Please open Control Panel – System – Device Manager. The picture below demonstrates the differences shown on the screen before and after the installation of driver program. If the system does not detect the ergonomic input device, this means either the installation process is not completed or the system used is pirated and the version is too low. To solve the problem, please reinstall the system or call Wacom’s Technology Department.
3. Failures caused by other programs: While installing the driver program for the tablet, it is reminded that there are already driver programs in the system; or after completion of installation, every time when the Wacom Tablet icon in the Control Panel is clicked on, error occurs and the message shows that the driver is not found. The possible reason may be that tablets of different models or from different brands have been installed in that computer. The solution is simple, please refer to the steps for manual uninstallation from 《Analysis and solutions to pressure sensitivity problem of the grip pen? 》 to solve the above problem.

My tablet cannot achieve absolute positioning with the monitor?

Usually this kind of failure is caused by the failure of the driver program, please re-install the drive program and check if computer virus or excessive dust causes system instability, resulting in instability of the driver program or even forceful exit. You can also refer to the solutions to the first question to solve the problem.
